Dr Bhaskar Basu


Dr Basu is the Clinical Lead for the Acute Rehabilitation following major trauma at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He is a very important part of the team that provides a comprehensive and specialist Neurorehabilitation service for complex patients in Greater Manchester. Dr Basu provides the consultant and clinical lead service for patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and other neurodegenerative diseases. He has a special interest in complex spasticity management following stroke or brain injury, including Botulinum Toxin chemo denervation and neurotoxin treatment in salivary glands.

He is a regular contributor to professional journals, and has taken an active interest in a number of rehabilitation, Research and educational projects for Manchester University, Salford University and University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN). He is the Contributor of the FORME research project on CFS/ME. He has a wealth of teaching experience and regularly presents at national and international meeting. He has a number of published articles in leading journals.

He is the consultant and clinical lead in amputee and prosthetic rehabilitation in Manchester subregional centre; teacher and trainer in British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (BSPRM) SIGAM Advanced Prosthetic and Amputee Rehabilitation course; one of the authors of Amputee and Prosthetic guideline BSPRM 2018 and National Chair of special interest group (SIG) for amputee Medicine BSPRM.

Dr Basu regularly contributes to “Independent Rehabilitation and Medico-Legal practice” for holistic assessment of complex rehabilitation needs. His experience covers all aspects of amputee rehabilitation, neurological diseases/ neurological trauma, its investigation and treatment including the interplay of effect of injury, and future outcome/ rehabilitation prognosis. Regarding highly specialist Amputee rehabilitation, he also regularly covers expert witness activity and medical/ legal report writing for traumatic or non-traumatic (vascular) amputation of limbs and the extended rehabilitation aspect.
